Lee Castle is no stranger to the underground music scene. This veteran DJ, producer, and radio host, originally from England took residence in Toronto in the early nineties. Lee is co-founder/owner of Flirt Canada, which has recently returned under the refreshed moniker FlirtUKG. After a long hiatus FlirtUKG is back with a focus on production, radio play, and artist development to help push the music across North America.
Some people may also recognize Lee Castle as Sassa’le of Version Xcursion. Lee is the sole founder of the present day Version Xcursion, established in 1996. The vision for Version Xcursion was to create a radio show that played music from the UK underground scene. This show was on air for over 15 years.
Flirt Canada was established in 1997 as a multi-media company that promoted UK urban music using a variety of mediums such as music and events production, media relations, and writing columns for music magazines in order to promote UK Garage/2 Step in North America.
Flirt Canada managed the longest weekly UK Garage Sunday night in North America for over three years at Nasa Dance Pub. This led to other residencies including the weekly UKG Friday night ‘HEIGHTS’ on the rooftop patio at the famous Guvernment night club. Flirt Canada hosted more than 200 events as well as five live shows. Flirt Canada also produced one Canadian Urban Music nominated UK Garage single Trust In Us feat. Alezandria. This movement did not go unnoticed. There were positive media stories in the Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, Now Magazine, Eye Magazine, Toronto Life and on Much Music. Flirt Canada became a reputable name in the UKG scene and this led to Lee being chosen by Craig David as the only North American DJ to spin on his 2002 North American Tour with an accompanying interview. This was followed by an interview with Dizzee Rascal on his first visit to Toronto. Other notable achievements through Flirt Canada were partnerships with The British Arts Council; Universal Music Canada; Beggars Banquet Canada; Locked On Records; Sun City Promotions (UK); Word Magazine; XL8ER Magazine; Deuce Magazine (UK) and Peace Magazine.
Lee’s trademark DJ sound can be described as UK bass driven music. He has been the opening DJ for a variety of well-known artists and interviewed many others. The list includes: Nintin Sawhney, Mariah Carey, Tony Touch, Gregory Hines, Massive Attack, Dizzee Rascal, Freddy McGregor, Streets, Smith & Mighty, Esthero, Bjork, Tricky, Portishead, Morcheeba, Craig David, Scientist, Mad Professor and many more.
More recently, Lee worked to provide a platform for local artists and showcase innovative new sounds, through both his solo work and the Version Xcursion radio show. He also wrote and produced three albums and a number of singles.
With FlirtUKG back in 2016, we have already seen the first FlirtUKG single Bass Line Pressure feat. Plain English with a video to follow.
