Born in Toronto and raised in the city’s Scarborough suburb, Derrick Ramirez, (aka Derrick O.) moved to Michigan after high school, first to the Ann Arbor area, then later moving to downtown Detroit where he held down several residencies while working as Label Manager for Derrick May’s seminal Transmat Records. At Transmat, Derrick and the team helped introduce the world to a new Detroit sound, working with artists like Luciano, Jeremy Ellis and Aril Brikha. Locally, the events Derrick produced introduced Motown to artists like Derrick Carter, Peanut Butter Wolf, the UK’s Omar and Toronto’s Kenny Glasgow.
As Director of Detroit’s Movement Festival, Derrick oversaw the last 2 years of the ‘free’ version of the event, which highlighted artists like J Dilla (RIP), Liquid Liquid and ESG and Francois K. Today Derrick resides back in his hometown of Toronto where he continues to DJ and host events at various clubs and venues.
